The U.S. Army said Friday it will immediately repair barracks at eight facilities in the wake of inspection at bases worldwide. The inspections were done the last week of April and covered nearly 150,000 barracks rooms. They found that 45 repairs needed priority attention, including new heating and cooling equipment, repainting, mold removal and other work. Army Secretary Pete Geren has said that $248 million in emergency funds has been appropriated to fix problems found during the inspections. (AP) ABERDEEN, Md. Military officials say a man shot by Aberdeen police is a soldier who had been away from Aberdeen Proving Ground without permission since last month. Army officials say 22-year-old Private Evan Parker, of Pittsford, N.Y., had been AWOL since late August. Aberdeen police say officers called to a disturbance at a motel Sunday night encountered Parker and when they learned his military status, they took him to the base. When officers returned to the motel around 11 a.m. Monday for a suspicious person call, Parker had returned. Police say he displayed a gun and waved it threateningly...

Mayor S. Fred Simmons' habit of carrying a gun around Aberdeen has received criticism from residents in recent weeks. Last week, it got him an award. An organization Simmons says he had never heard of announced it has bestowed upon him the Responsible Democracy Award - because he carries a gun and isn't afraid to say so.

Archaeologists believe they may have discovered one of the oldest churches in Scotland during an excavation in Aberdeen. They are awaiting test results which will confirm whether they have uncovered a religious burial site dating back to the 6th Century. The find was made during Scotland's biggest archaeological dig in the east kirk of St Nicholas Church. So far 300 skeletons have been unearthed, far more than expected. The excavation is part of a £5m renovation of the site.
